John Isner was born in North Carolina to Robert and Karen Isner. His parents played an important role in shaping his athletic career. They have instilled discipline and a strong work ethic into the 6 ft 10 in tall player. These values, combined with unwavering support, helped mould Isner into the player he is today.

Bob Isner is the father of the American player and has been a rather active personality himself. Bob Isner ran for the United States House of Representatives in 2016 to represent North Carolina’s 13th Congressional District. On June 7, 2016, Isner was defeated in the Democratic primary by Bruce Davis. He is an engineer by training, and his problem-solving approach inspired him to run for Congress with the goal of uniting the two parties.

Due to his harmonious mindset of attempting to unify the two parties, Robert has inspired his son to be mindful of everything he learns during his training and how to apply it on the court.

Karen Isner is John’s mother. She has dedicated her life to making sure that John and his two brothers have a steady presence at home. Their bond is great and secure. But things weren’t good for the Isner family at one time, as Karen was struck with cancer. She was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2004 when the player was in college.

He wrote a letter to the ATP Tour in 2018, which talked about the entire predicament. He was unable to be with his mother often, as his college was rather far away. Difficult trials awaited everyone, as it took over three years until Karen was declared cancer-free and safe.

“Today is a special moment for myself and my family, as we recognize the exceptional care my mother received at UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center and the North Carolina Cancer Hospital. Not only am I grateful to be standing alongside my mother, but also amongst the incredible medical staff who took such great care of her,” John Isner said during the dedication ceremony at the cancer hospital.

As his mother was dealing with cancer, his parents couldn’t attend his matches early in his career. But after she was rid of cancer, they frequently traveled to see him play his best. They’ve seen him play all of his Masters finals. Especially the 2018 Miami Open, where he won his first and only ATP 1000 Masters title.

Additionally, his mother’s predicament helped him become a more charitable person. After she was cancer-free, Isner decided to donate a massive amount to the institution which helped her.

In a note to ATP Tour, he said, “My mom is also why we’ve raised more than $200,000 for UNC Lineberger during charity exhibitions. This year we’re raffling off a chance to come to Wimbledon, with proceeds benefiting the hospital, where the doctors saved my mom’s life and save lives every day.”
